Leoš Janáček Airport Ostrava (IATA: OSR, ICAO: LKMT), formerly Ostrava-Mošnov International Airport, is an airport that serves the city of Ostrava, in the Czech Republic, located 20 km (12 mi) to the southwest[1] of the city. Due to its distance from the city centre, there are no noise restrictions enforced on the airport. It acts as a point of entry to northern Moravia and Czech Silesia. The city of Ostrava is a major economic and industrial centre for the area.
The airport is open 24 hours daily. As well as being able to serve aircraft as large as an Antonov An-124 (the largest aeroplane ever mass produced), the heliport allows it to serve helicopters, alongside fixed wing aircraft.
In 2005, 265,882 passengers went through Ostrava-Mošnov passenger terminal, 2,228 tonnes of cargo were handled and there were 16,136 aircraft movements. In 2008 a new maintenance hangar CEAM was opened. Plans have been announced to construct a new cargo terminal. Since 2003 NATO Day, a military show,[2] takes place in the area of Ostrava airport.
Construction of a new terminal started in July 2005. It cost 320 million CZK (cca. 10.66 million EUR) and opened on December 13, 2006.
During the dispute between Ryanair and Prague Airport it was believed that the airline would move flights to Ostrava. Ryanair pulled out of Prague but did not move flights to any other airport.
